MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Results from a new Qualtrics survey commissioned by Entellus Medical, a leader in balloon sinus technologies, and SinusSurgeryOptions.com, a website dedicated to sinusitis patient education, demonstrate the significant and lasting impact of sinusitis on quality of life measures including work, leisure, relationships, sleep and fitness. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses that affects 37 million people each year, making it one of the most common health problems in the U.S. with symptoms that include facial pain, teeth pain, headaches, fatigue, sore throat and bad breath.
“Sinusitis & Quality of Life Survey” responses concluded that 33 percent of sinusitis sufferers are spending $250-$1,000 annually on over-the-counter treatments, physician consultations and co-pays to treat their sinusitis symptoms. The survey also revealed that 34 percent of sinusitis sufferers feel their work activities and performance have been significantly impacted, with frequently missed days of work.
Sinusitis sufferers are not finding relief at home. More than 35 percent of respondents noted their leisure activities have been negatively impacted and 18 percent indicated it influenced their personal relationships. Further, 36 percent of sinusitis sufferers indicated their sex life has also been negatively impacted.
“These results affirm our suspicions and bring to life the prevalence and power of chronic sinusitis on patients’ quality of life,” said Dr. Nadim Bikhazi, a nationally-recognized ear, nose and throat specialist with the Odgen Clinic. “If you are suffering from sinusitis, now is the time to end your downward spiral by seeking the appropriate treatment to change your life.”
The research is the most current comprehensive exploration of the link between sinusitis and quality of life. The results were derived from an anonymous survey sample of more than 520 people between the ages of 25-90 in the U.S. who have experienced a sinusitis episode in the last year.
“This survey confirms our understanding that hundreds of thousands of Americans who suffer from chronic sinusitis each year fail to get relief of their symptoms even after several attempts at medical therapy,” said Brian Farley, CEO of Entellus Medical. “Fortunately, today balloon dilation of the blocked sinus drainage passages is available to these patients as a fast and effective procedure that can be performed in the ENT physician’s office. Balloon sinus dilation is the only therapy proven to be as effective as traditional sinus surgery while allowing faster recovery. By enabling treatment in the doctor’s office, the approach requires less cost to the patient and the healthcare system.”
