WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This week, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) announced that Dr. Barry Logan, Vice President of Forensic Science Initiatives at NMS Labs and Executive Director of the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE), is among seventeen leading forensic scientists and researchers to be appointed to the membership of its long awaited Forensic Science Standards Board (FSSB). Dr. Logan, a past president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) has been appointed to represent the 7,000 member organization on the newly created Board.
The FSSB has been created after five years of review and consultation to address the need for uniform national standards for the practice of forensic science recommended in the National Academy of Sciences 2009 report on Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States.
The FSSB will oversee three resource committees, five scientific area committees and numerous. subcommittees that will focus on specific disciplines, including DNA, toxicology, medico-legal death investigation, facial identification, latent fingerprints and firearms and toolmarks. The subcommittees will propose consensus documentary standards, for adoption by the Board, to improve the quality and consistency of work throughout the forensic science community.

The FSSB is made up of representatives of various leading forensic science professional organizations, researchers and practitioners who will chair the scientific area committees.
