NMS Labs Launches Testing Solution to Detect Pyrrolidinophenones, a New Group of Designer Drugs

WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--()--NMS Labs announces the launch of its newest test offering for the latest group of agents to have come to the fore in the rapidly changing Designer Drug arena in the US. The Pyrrolidinophenones or “Pyrros” are potent stimulants with psychoactive properties becoming popular with young people and drug users looking for a newer, different high. Chemically related to some of the better known “Bath Salts” drugs such as methylone (“Molly”) and mephedrone (“meow meow“), the compounds are so new that they are not yet on the radar of many forensic toxicology labs.

The test includes Alpha PBP, Alpha PPP, Alpha PVP, Pyrovalerone, Naphyrone, MePPP, MDPPP, MOPPP, MPHP, and MPBP.

The medical literature increasingly contains reports of toxicity and death related to use of these drugs, including a story of an 18 year old man who was presented to the ER after smoking "Spice", with severe agitation, hallucinations and prolonged psychosis and tested positive for a cocktail of drugs including MDPPP. In another case, a 27 year old man was admitted to the hospital with agitation and foot fractures from jumping out of a window after snorting a powder he believed to be cocaine, but in fact, it turned out to be MPHP.

NMS Labs has regularly developed panels to test for a variety of these new compounds as one cycle replaces another. A panel of this popular group of compounds means not having to randomly order tests for individual drugs, but to cover a number of emerging related drugs in a single test. This approach can help to streamline toxicological detection as the use of designer drugs continues to present challenges in diagnosis to clinicians and emergency room personnel, employers, and law enforcement and death investigation professionals. NMS Labs tests help to bridge the gap when the inevitable shift in compounds occurs as new drug scheduling laws are passed.

NMS Labs continues to dedicate resources to remain one step ahead of drug manufacturers and drug dealers using their Drug Intelligence Monitoring System, DIMS®, a strategy that draws information from researchers, clinicians, drug manufacturers, law enforcement and drug users themselves about the latest drugs to hit the streets.

NMS Labs offers a wide range of topics and tools to help law enforcement, healthcare professionals and parents understand this illicit market and provide insights into the dynamic nature of designer drug trends. Visit DesignerDrugTrends.org to find current information about local laws, national drug scheduling laws, drug sightings, scientific changes, emerging designer drugs and testing trends. Knowledge sharing keeps us one step ahead of drug manufacturers and dealers.

NMS Labs is on the forefront of identifying emerging compounds found in designer drugs and has an eye on the future through its Center for Innovation, Designer Drugs Initiative.
