Cal-Comp USA Expands Operations in Mexico

SAN DIEGO--()--Cal-Comp USA, a division of New Kinpo Group (NKG), today announced a major expansion of its operations in Reynosa, Mexico. Cal-Comp recently purchased a 125,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Reynosa, located immediately across the border from McAllen, Texas. The new facility will be operated by Cal-Comp de Mexico, a newly established subsidiary, and it is expected to employ approximately 500 people within two to three years.

Cal-Comp USA acquired Spectragraphics Corporation of San Diego and, through its subsidiaries, operates manufacturing and design facilities in San Diego (SMS Technologies); Logansport, Indiana (Total Electronics); and Reynosa, Mexico. Cal-Comp will transfer all equipment and move 70 employees from a maquiladora factory in Reynosa previously operated by Spectragraphics to the new facility as well as hire approximately 75 new employees before the end of 2011.

Cal-Comp’s parent company NKG, headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, operates factories in mainland China, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Brazil and Poland. NKG 2010 revenues were $6 billion, and it employs 36,000 workers in electronics design, manufacturing, and logistics. Products produced are in the consumer, computing, industrial, automotive, medical and communications arenas.

The impetus for this major expansion came from a US customer of NKG who markets TV set top boxes. NKG has been manufacturing the products in China and Thailand, but after evaluating the full cost of ownership of the product for the North America market, the customer requested that the manufacturing be relocated from Asia to Mexico. Other electronic products will also be manufactured in the new facility.

"This major expansion in Reynosa, Mexico shows our commitment to the North American market and to serving our customers anywhere in the world," said Simon Shen, president of Cal-Comp. “We see a bright future for this facility and look forward to building a presence there to serve a variety of customers.”
