Edwards AFB to Deploy McKesson’s PACS System under New Contract with Department of Defense

U.S. Air Force names McKesson as approved PACS vendor

ATLANTA--()--Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) has successfully replaced its hospital’s picture archiving communications system (PACS) with McKesson’s Horizon Medical Imaging™ PACS. The new system is designed to help the hospital increase efficiency and improve care delivery through improved image management and distribution. Located in Edwards, Calif., Edwards AFB is the first of three bases to replace its system with McKesson’s PACS solution as part of a new contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.

McKesson recently was named a PACS vendor of choice by the department after completing the Air Force’s Defense Information Assurance Certification & Accreditation Process. Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C., Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, N.M., and McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kan., plan to install McKesson’s PACS early this year.

“The U.S. Air Force has some of the most rigorous security and technology requirements in the armed forces,” said Thomas Lewis, director, U.S. Air Force PACS Office. “McKesson has proven that its approach to PACS design, implementation and support is well-suited to meet our unique needs for security clearance and efficient care delivery.”

McKesson’s Horizon Medical Imaging PACS provides a robust, expandable, low-risk and cost-effective solution that integrates patient images and radiologists’ reports within the medical record. The ability to access complete patient data helps enable physicians to accelerate clinical diagnoses and provide better care for their patients.

“A mission-critical environment requires more than just industry-leading solutions to help meet the demands of healthcare delivery,” said Joe Biegel, vice president of product management and product marketing, Medical Imaging Group, McKesson Provider Technologies. “It also requires an innovative approach to service and support. We are honored to have the opportunity to use McKesson’s broad range of capabilities to serve the U.S. Air Force.”
