NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications consultancy, today announced it has appointed Nathan Ballard as Managing Director. Ballard is a leading political communications executive with years of experience handling high-profile clients and campaigns. He will be based in San Francisco and will report to Burson-Marsteller Executive Vice President Worldwide Josh Gottheimer.

Nathan Ballard is a communications strategist with expertise in media relations, crisis communications, new media and creative media. He was the communications director for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom from 2007 to 2009. During his tenure, Ballard was key in increasing Newsom’s visibility in national mainstream media and new media as well as managing communications during several crises.
From 2004-2007, Ballard provided communications services to a range of clients including labor unions, nonprofit organizations, law firms, private businesses, political candidates, and initiative campaigns. During the 2004 presidential election, he served as the Democratic National Committee’s communications director in California. In the 2004 presidential primaries, he was press secretary for Senator John Kerry in Northern California and communications director for General Wesley Clark in Missouri. In 2003, he was communications director for the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. In 2002, Ballard was a communications director for the California Democratic Party during its sweep of statewide offices and communications director for New Hampshire Senate President Bev Hollingworth’s campaign for governor.
Ballard, a former deputy city attorney, has worked for public officials including Congressman Vic Fazio, Congresswoman Jackie Speier, California Senator Lucy Killea, California Assemblyman Joe Nation, California Assemblywoman Helen Thomson, Yolo County Supervisor Mike McGowan, San Francisco City Attorney Louise Renne, and San Francisco Public Defender Kimiko Burton.
Ballard obtained his law degree from University of California, Hastings and his bachelor’s from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a member of the State Bar of California.
