AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Public Strategies today announced that veteran journalist and former Pulitzer Prize Board chairman Richard Oppel has joined the firm as a senior advisor. Oppel, who served as editor of three newspapers and as a Washington bureau chief for more than 30 years, was named Editor of the Year by the National Press Foundation in 1988.
Oppel was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board for 9 years, serving as chairman in 2008-2009. He was editor of the Austin American-Statesman from 1995 to 2008. He was chief of Knight Ridder Newspapers’ Washington bureau from 1993 to 1995 and was editor of the Charlotte Observer from 1978 until 1993. During his 15 years as editor, the Observer won two Pulitzers for Meritorious Public Service and shared a third Pulitzer for Editorial Cartooning with The Atlanta Constitution. He was executive editor of the Tallahassee Democrat from 1977 to 1978.
Oppel also served as president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 2000 and 2001, and was president of the North Carolina Press Association in the early 1990s. He is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Graduate School of Business.
