SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Artes Medical (NASDAQ:ARTE) today announced that Ohio resident Susan Hickman has been chosen as the Grand Prize winner of the ArteFill® Face Forward makeover contest.
A single mom, Hickman has always made her special needs son feel like a prince, but this past weekend she was the one receiving the royal treatment during her $10,000 makeover. Artes Medical, makers of ArteFill, the first and only FDA-approved non-resorbable wrinkle filler for the correction of smile lines, selected Susan from hundreds of applicants who submitted personal stories about a current or upcoming time of change and growth.
“Susan embodies what this contest is all about – strong women empowering themselves as they face important life milestones,” said Christopher J. Reinhard, Executive Chairman, Artes Medical. “As her son enters his 20’s, we wanted to recognize Susan for her strength and help her approach this next phase of her life with a confident outlook and fresh new look.”
To kick off Susan’s transformation, dermatologist Dr. Gary Palmer of Centerville, Ohio treated Susan with ArteFill, smoothing away her smile lines with the first truly long-lasting wrinkle filler. After her treatment, Susan was whisked away to New York where she was met by celebrity stylist Billy Lowe, known for his work on TLC’s Ten Years Younger and for creating extraordinary looks on and off the red carpet. Billy and a team of personal shoppers took Susan through a two day transformation from a busy mom in jeans into a modern mom worthy of the runway.
“Looking your best builds confidence and self-esteem,” said Lowe. “Regardless of her stage of life, when a woman is happy with her appearance, she is more equipped to face life's daily challenges, and confident enough to reach for her highest goals.”
Susan’s only child was born in 1988 with Down syndrome. Soon afterwards she began a new life as a single parent. Through the past twenty years Susan has worked tirelessly raising her son to be an outgoing, caring and capable young man.
“Life is all about changes. Some we choose, but some come unexpectedly, and it’s how we face them that determines how we grow as individuals,” said Hickman. “ArteFill and this makeover has given me the confidence to face the most challenging of life’s changes with strength, poise and grace.”

ArteFill is the first and only FDA-approved non-resorbable injectable dermal filler for the correction of wrinkles known as smile lines or nasolabial folds. The unique PMMA microspheres in ArteFill are not absorbed by the body and therefore provide the first-of-its-kind support for long-lasting wrinkle correction.
An ArteFill Skin Test is required before initial treatment. The most common adverse events associated with ArteFill treatment, similar to those observed with other dermal fillers, are lumpiness, persistent swelling or redness and increased sensitivity at the injection site.
ArteFill is a proprietary formulation comprised of polymethylmethacrylate, or PMMA, microspheres and bovine collagen, and is the only PMMA-based injectable product that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Artes Medical is the sole manufacturer of ArteFill, which is only available in the United States through Artes Medical, and Artes Medical has not entered into distribution or licensing arrangements with any third party for the distribution or sale of ArteFill, or any other PMMA-based dermal filler, outside the United States.
