MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The University of Minnesota and TCF Bank celebrated the commencement of construction at the new $288 million on-campus football facility to be known as TCF Bank Stadium. The facility is scheduled to open in August of 2009.
TCF Financial Corporation was a real catalyst to bringing gopher football back to campus. Early on in the process TCF pledged $35 million over 25 years in exchange for naming rights for TCF Bank Stadium.
“TCF Bank and The University of Minnesota share many common attributes and the highest regard for Gopher Athletics. The relationship between the two entities is appropriately manifested in the building and co-branding of TCF Bank Stadium” said Mark L. Jeter, President of TCF Bank Minnesota.
The TCF Bank Stadium project represents a significant partnership between a private entity and a public university and is proving to be a huge success in bringing Gopher football back to campus.
At the center of the partnership is the new TCF Bank Stadium Logo. The logo embodies the prideful traditions of “the collegiate way” and the time-honored lines of a prideful legacy that is at the core all of Gopher athletes.
The arch shape in the logo is inspired from the architectural detail of the stadium representing a direct link to human victory and rebirth.
The Minnesota “M” is firmly adorning the capstone surrounded by a laurel wreath welcoming all those who enter to victory, triumph and fame.
Finally the furling banner communicates a sense of pageantry and celebration. “This logo demonstrates the celebration of two great partners honoring the legacies and traditions of the great state of Minnesota and this great University,” said Athletics Director Joel Maturi.
TCF Bank Stadium will have an open-air horseshoe design with a capacity of 50,000, including general seats as well as an array of club and suite seats. The stadium will complement the campus environment, have a collegiate look and feel, create two landscaped plazas and accommodate other uses. The design allows for maximum flexibility, including potential expansion to 80,000 seats.
