W.M. Keck Foundation’s Jon Sutton Day Appointed to AltaSea’s Board of Trustees

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the world’s leading tech hub for the blue economy, today announced the appointment of businessman and philanthropist Jon Sutton Day to its Board of Trustees, effective March 31.

A lifelong Angeleno, Day currently serves on the Board of Directors of the W.M. Keck Foundation, one of the nation’s largest philanthropic foundations supporting medical research, science and engineering, and educational programs. He is on the Foundation’s Executive Committee and the Southern California Grant Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is Vice President of the Robert Day Foundation, established by his late father Robert Day, who was the longtime chairman and CEO of the W.M. Keck Foundation and a philanthropist in his own right.

“AltaSea is making Los Angeles the global leader in the blue economy and building a model for how ocean-based innovation can strengthen communities, educate the next generation, and accelerate research that will generate new jobs while saving the planet,” said Day. “I am honored to join the Board and help continue to bring AltaSea’s great work to scale.”

Day is the founding partner of Ironwood Hospitality Partners, founded in 2018 to reposition distressed hotel assets. He also serves on the boards of the Willametta Keck Day Foundation, the Oakmont Corporation, and the Dunn School.

“Jon brings a deep commitment to civic leadership and philanthropy, along with strong strategic governance experience across many mission-driven and private-sector organizations,” said AltaSea President & CEO Terry Tamminen. “His perspective will be a major asset as AltaSea continues to expand workforce and education pathways, as well as build partnerships, that accelerate innovation across the blue economy.”

Day joins a Board of Trustees that includes leaders in ocean science, climate innovation, education, and industry. Earlier this year, Emmy and Four-Time James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Zimmern and environmental journalist and ocean advocate Ashlan Cousteau also joined the Board.

Now in its 12th year, AltaSea has developed a 35-acre ocean technology campus that is home to many innovative climate solutions focused on the ocean in a variety of industries, including aquaculture, carbon capture, renewable energy, and ocean exploration. AltaSea also partners with high schools, colleges, and universities to provide educational experiences for the next generation of climate scientists and innovators.
