Avangrid Celebrates International Day of Education by Opening Doors to Opportunity for the Energy Workforce
Avangrid cultivates the energy workforce of tomorrow through employee development, university collaboration, and hands-on learning
ORANGE, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, is celebrating International Day of Education on January 24, 2026, by highlighting its deep commitment to learning, collaborative research, and workforce development —both within the company and across the communities it serves.
“Education transforms lives and strengthens our communities,” said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda. “Avangrid’s role is to open doors, through partnerships, sponsorships, and experiential learning, so we prepare tomorrow’s leaders to turn ideas and innovation into real-world impact for a better energy future.”
“Avangrid is a place of possibility, where education is the foundation for our employees and for the communities we serve, fueling innovation, individual growth, and delivering the nation’s critical energy infrastructure,” said Ignacio Estella, Avangrid Senior Vice President of Talent, Performance, Innovation and Equal Opportunity “Our commitment to lifelong learning ensures our workforce is equipped to rapidly evolve, adapt, and lead the way towards a resilient and energy future.”
In 2025, Avangrid supported more than 500,000 hours of employee learning and development, combining on‑the‑job experience with formal education and innovation‑driven programs. The company also established a nationwide ecosystem of 31 university, college, and research partners to advance technical expertise, develop emerging energy technologies, and prepare its workforce for the future of the energy industry.
Avangrid’s focus on learning is also a commitment to equal opportunities. Employees participate in development opportunities that support veterans, employees with disabilities, and individuals at all stages of their careers. Nearly one in four employees engages in mentoring or employee resource groups that help build a culture grounded in dignity, opportunity, and belonging.
These investments in learning and connection build long term careers and generate economic impact across 26 states, where Avangrid employees design, build, operate, and maintain the energy infrastructure that communities rely on every day. Early career professionals contribute to mission critical projects that power sustainable growth and create good jobs, while senior leaders participate in field based simulations to ensure they are prepared to serve communities safely, reliably, and effectively.
Avangrid’s partnerships in support of IBEW Local 10 with SUNY Broome and IBEW Local 470-1 with Housatonic (CT State) strengthen regional line worker training by combining academic instruction and hands on utility experience, to support skilled trade pathways aligned with utility apprenticeship standards. Through these partnerships, students gain access to paid internships and hands on practical training modeled on real world environments, ensuring they enter the energy workforce with the skills and safety mindset that is essential for a resilient and modernized grid.
Avangrid and the Iberdrola Group maintain long-term academic partnerships that advance energy research and workforce development. Through the Iberdrola–Avangrid Chair at the MIT Energy Initiative, Avangrid supports engineering education, collaborative research, internships, and sponsorship of the MIT Energy & Climate Club. The objective of this initiative is to train a new generation of young professionals in power systems engineering to address the urgent need for research development of new technologies that will contribute a reliable energy future.
Avangrid’s longstanding partnership with Yale University focuses on collaborating on world class research in various energy topics and to share knowledge among future leaders in the energy industry. The partnership includes sponsorship of Yale’s annual energy conference, support for research, and collaboration with graduate students.
Additional collaborations include a research agreement with Clarkson University on grid modernization and advisory roles at UMass Amherst and the WISER (Center for Weather Innovation and Smart Energy and Resilience) consortium hosted by SUNY Albany and UConn. Avangrid has also participated as an industry advisory board member within the WindSTAR consortium hosted by UMass Lowell and UT Dallas.
Avangrid also supports students through experiential learning programs such as its annual Energy Innovation Hackathon, which in 2025 brought together 181 students from 16 universities to solve real-world energy challenges using Avangrid data. The competition connects students directly with energy professionals, encourages creative problem-solving, and exposes emerging talent to career pathways in the industry. By engaging students from institutions such as Yale University, the University of Texas at Dallas, and SUNY Binghamton, the Hackathon reinforces Avangrid’s belief that opportunity, innovation, and hands-on experience are essential to preparing the next generation of leaders for the for the future of energy.
Beyond academic partnerships and direct student engagement, the Avangrid Foundation has invested more than $10.2 million in higher education, supporting scholarships, campus food security, critical equipment, and student programs. Over the past decade, this funding has supported 21 institutions across the country, including: Binghamton University Foundation, SUNY Broome, Central New Mexico Community College, Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation, Cornell University, the Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation, Kalamazoo Community College Foundation, Kennebec Valley Community College Foundation, Lake Region Community College Foundation, MIT, Monroe Community College Foundation, the Roux Institute at Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology, UC Davis, the University of Maine, the University of Southern Maine, Yale University, Oregon State University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Rochester.
