Built around a single, integrated back office, Modeshift’s 360-degree fare collection platform connects mobile ticketing, account-based payments, validating fareboxes, TVMs and real-time data, giving agencies greater operational control and riders a consistent, modern payment experience across every channel.

2025 highlights include:

  • Expanded to almost 60 transit agencies across the U.S. and Europe
  • Enabled over 71 million trips for 4.13M riders, generating 10.8 million digital tickets worldwide
  • Continued rapid international growth, supporting fare collection in 18 U.S. cities, 35 cities in Romania, five cities in Bulgaria, and Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia

Launched Modern Fareboxes

In 2025, Modeshift addressed one of transit’s most persistent challenges: aging fareboxes that are costly to maintain, slow to repair and mismatched with modern payment models. Through its partnership with ITSMAX Solutions, Modeshift launched its validating fareboxes to the U.S. market, fully integrated into its cloud-based platform and designed to function as part of a modular, software-driven system.

Modeshift’s approach simplifies hardware while strengthening the overall system:

  • Simplified fareboxes focused on secure cash handling with fewer moving parts
  • Validators and mobile ticketing for fast, contactless payments
  • One back office for every payment method, integrating fareboxes, validators and mobile tickets into a single, future-ready platform

By combining modern fareboxes with account-based ticketing and real-time data, Modeshift gives agencies a practical alternative to legacy systems without sacrificing reliability, flexibility or control.

Initial farebox deployments are currently underway with two transit agencies, with full go-live expected in 2026.

New Features Transformed Rider and Agency Experiences

Modeshift launched powerful features in 2025 that reshaped how agencies manage fares and serve riders:

  • Fare Capping – Automatically ensures riders never pay more than the best available fare; rolled out with Indiana County Transit Authority
  • Expanded Ticket Distribution – Supports digital pass sharing for individuals, small businesses, resellers and large institutional partners
  • Top-Up Card – Enables riders to top up any NFC card online, including cards belonging to other riders
  • Paid Transfers – Allows seamless travel across routes and zones with automatic, cashless payments calculated by Modeshift’s platform
  • Two-Way Driver–Dispatcher Communication – Real-time messaging and voice calls for faster operational coordination

Industry Recognition for Innovation and Impact

Modeshift’s technology and customer success were recognized globally in 2025:

  • Awarded two Gold Stevie® Awards for Technological Excellence, earning Company of the Year and Technical Innovation of the Year
    • Crawford Area Transportation Authority was recognized for achieving 68% passenger adoption within eight months of launching Modeshift
    • Skopje, North Macedonia, was celebrated for modernizing its entire 600-bus network, replacing 15-year-old legacy technology in just three months
  • Modeshift Romania received the Mobility and Urban Transport Award for Digitalization and Smart Payments in Public Transport

“2025 marked a turning point for Modeshift,” said Miroslav Katsarov, CEO of Modeshift. “Agencies are no longer willing to piece together disconnected systems or rely on aging hardware. By unifying fareboxes, validators, mobile ticketing and features like fare capping into one 360-degree platform, we’re giving transit agencies a modern, flexible path forward—and riders a better experience every time they board.”
