High-Performance 28V USB Type-C Dual-Role Power Delivery Controllers from Diodes Incorporated Manage Power Requests and Outputs for Battery-Powered Portable Devices

PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD) today introduces the AP53781 and AP53782 28V USB Type-C® Power Delivery (PD) dual-role power (DRP) controllers designed for managing DC power requests and outputs in battery-powered portable devices. The controllers support the latest USB PD3.1 extended power range (EPR) standard, delivering up to 140W for charging as well as releasing power from the internal battery. USB Type-C connector-equipped devices (TCD) featuring these dual-role ports include power banks, power tools, e-bikes, and portable displays, which removes the need for users to carry around several adaptors or cables.

The AP53781 and AP53782 feature powerful firmware configurations to automatically negotiate with the PD3.1 compliance charger as a sink role or TCD as a source role. Both devices support dead battery mode when the system battery cannot power the controllers, where they will act in a sink role until an external power source is connected. The 34V tolerant configuration channel (CC) pins enable robust system protection from accidental shorts to the high-voltage VBUS power line.

The AP53781 has a preloaded power data object/request data object (PDO/RDO) menu for easily selecting between the source/sink roles. The source role PDO menu has eight profiles. The RDO menu offers eight fixed output voltage levels and eight different output current selections as a sink role. These multiple power profiles are set by external resistors, removing the need for an expensive microcontroller unit (MCU) and reducing design complexity.

The AP53782 includes an I2C interface that provides greater flexibility for more sophisticated designs. The device communicates with the host MCU to automatically determine a more flexible power profile for the sink or source roles, as well as other intelligent power-management functions.

The AP53781 is supplied in the small-footprint 3mm x 3mm W-QFN3030-16 (Type A1) package, and the AP53782 in the 4mm x 4mm W-QFN4040-24 (Type A1) package. Both operate across the -40°C to +125°C junction temperature range. The AP53781 and AP53782 are available at $0.57 and $0.59, respectively, in 1,000-piece quantities.
