ComEd Names Ajit Apte as SVP of Customer Operations

Apte, a 20+ year veteran of Exelon, succeeds Melissa Washington, recently elevated to SVP of Governmental, Regulatory and External Affairs at ComEd

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ComEd announced Ajit Apte, with more than two decades of experience in the industry and at Exelon, has been appointed to the role of senior vice president of Customer Operations. Effective earlier this month, this key appointment will position ComEd to continue to enhance the customer experience for over 9 million people served in northern Illinois.

Apte will lead ComEd’s customer-facing teams, including the utility’s customer care center, customer financial operations, large customer solutions, smart grid and field meter services and clean energy solutions teams. In this new role, he will help ensure that every customer receives the support they need to successfully navigate their clean energy journey. This includes delivering programs that help reduce energy usage and connecting in-need customers with ComEd’s menu of billing assistance options, such as the upcoming Low Income Discount program launching in January.

“Ajit is a highly respected leader in our industry with a track record of success within the Exelon business, having demonstrated his ability to lead operational initiatives that directly enhance the customer experience,” said ComEd President and CEO Gil Quiniones. “Given the dramatic changes occurring within our industry, including rapidly evolving customer demands, it is essential to have someone with Ajit’s knowledge and experience who can support ComEd customers as we continue to advance the clean energy transition.”

Apte first joined Exelon in 2002 and has held executive roles within Exelon and Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) overseeing information technology, customer strategy, technical services and customer operations. Most recently, Apte has served as the vice president of Customer Operations at BGE, where he has led the company in reshaping the customer experience, including leading key technology upgrades to enhance the customer portal for BGE’s 1.3 million electric and 700,000 natural gas customers, and driving various efforts to elevate the customer experience across the Exelon enterprise.

“It is a privilege to serve ComEd’s Customers and an exciting time to join ComEd. I am proud to build on the impressive momentum the utility has established to support customer needs throughout northern Illinois,” said Ajit Apte, senior vice president of customer operations at ComEd. “I look forward to the opportunity to support customers navigate our programs to help reduce their energy use, lower their electric bills and support their personal clean energy journeys.”

Apte brings extensive board and community service experience to the role, including roles as a trustee of the Creative Alliance, a Baltimore non-profit that builds community by bringing together artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds. He also recently finalized his tenure on the board of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, whose mission is to empower, enrich and enhance the quality of life for everyone through equitable access to information, services and opportunity.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from SV National Institute of Technology in Surat, India and a master’s degree in electrical engineering in microprocessor systems from the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, India.

Apte, who has served in a leadership capacity in various roles within Exelon and its operating companies since 2011, steps into the SVP of Customer Operations role most recently held by Melissa Washington, who earlier this month was elevated to senior vice president of Government Relations and External Affairs (GREA) at ComEd.

ComEd is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), a Fortune 200 company and one of the nation’s largest utility companies, serving more than 10.7 million electricity and natural gas customers.
