Orion Expands Investment Solutions Lineup with Addition of SpiderRock Option Overlay SMAs

OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Orion, a premier provider of transformative wealthtech solutions powering the growth of financial advisors and the enterprise firms that serve them, today announced the addition of SpiderRock Advisors’ option overlay separately managed accounts (SMAs) to its Wealth Advisory platform, expanding the breadth of strategies available to advisors and their clients.

SpiderRock Advisors, a part of BlackRock, provides customized option overlay strategies to investors, combining world-class technology with comprehensive derivatives expertise.

SpiderRock Advisors provides advisors institutional-quality trading, advanced risk management, and a wide range of strategies for concentrated stock, equity portfolios, and fixed income or cash positions.

“We’re pleased to add SpiderRock’s option overlay SMA strategies to the Orion platform, giving advisors new ways to manage risk, generate income, and transition portfolios tax-efficiently,” said Ron Pruitt, President of Orion Wealth Management. “By expanding the lineup of high-quality, professionally managed strategies available on our platform, we continue to equip advisors with the investment solution options they need to deliver flexible, outcome-driven approaches that help their clients achieve their financial goals with confidence.”

SpiderRock employs an active approach to options management that seeks to improve risk-adjusted returns tax-efficiently. SpiderRock’s strategies operate as overlays, meaning they do not require an upfront sale of client holdings. Once enrolled, clients can customize accounts with “no call away” and “strategic liquidation” features that seek to defer capital gains realization throughout the lifecycle of the account. The scale of SpiderRock’s proprietary trading platform then allows SpiderRock to aggregate orders across thousands of accounts to deliver institutional-quality trading and execution.

“Providing access to option overlay strategies for advisors on Orion’s platform will enable greater opportunity for portfolio customization for investors seeking a wide range of investment outcomes. In light of recent market performance, the demand has never been higher for our solutions," said Eric Metz, President and Chief Investment Officer of SpiderRock Advisors. “These strategies have the potential to support income generation, downside protection and concentrated stock risk management in a portfolio as investors navigate an increasingly complex market environment, with an ever-important focus on after-tax outcomes."

Advisors can now leverage SpiderRock SMAs within Orion Wealth Advisory to:

  • Hedge concentrated stock positions
  • Manage risk across equity portfolios
  • Generate income using covered calls, index options, or cash-secured puts
  • Implement tax-efficient portfolio transitions
