Edison International Celebrates Lineworker Scholarship Recipients

Twelve Lineworker Scholars announced on National Lineworker Appreciation Day

ROSEMEAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Edison International today announced 12 recipients of its Lineworker Scholarship Program, which awards up to $25,000 per recipient to pursue careers in the skilled trade workforce at Southern California Edison (SCE). The announcement coincides with National Lineworker Appreciation Day, celebrated by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) in recognition of the essential work and dedication of lineworkers.

“The Edison International Lineworker Scholarship is about opening doors and investing in the next generation of talent,” said Steve Powell, president and chief executive officer of SCE. “I am incredibly proud of the work our lineworkers and skilled tradespeople do every day to safely keep the lights on for our customers, while strengthening and modernizing the grid to meet growing demand as we transition to a clean energy future.”

The Lineworker Scholarship equips recipients with tuition and tools to obtain a Powerline Mechanic Certificate Program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and the cost to obtain a Class A driver’s license. The scholarship also covers support services as needed, such as housing, transportation and childcare. Successful graduates are then eligible for entry-level, skilled trade positions at SCE after completing the company’s preemployment requirements. All jobs will be located within SCE’s 50,000-square-mile service area.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of lineworkers is projected to grow by 8% through 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. Edison International is committed to supporting employment opportunities by advancing the development of a skilled trade workforce in Southern California. Now in its fifth year, the Lineworker Scholarship has supported more than 35 people. It is funded by Edison International shareholders — not customers— in partnership with IBEW Local 47.
