CleanJoule Commissions Latest Industrial Manufacturing Facility, CJ1, Achieving Critical Milestone in Advanced Fuel Production

Energy-dense Advanced Fuels, CycloSAF and SpaceSAF, move closer to industrial scale production and ASTM International qualification

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CleanJoule, an advanced fuels company for aviation, aerospace and defense, today announced it has commissioned its newest industrial manufacturing facility for CycloSAF and SpaceSAF production, CJ1. CycloSAF delivers 10 percent greater energy density than Jet A, expanding the performance of any aircraft and solving an essential demand from the industry, regulators, and policymakers seeking to support domestic fuel production as part of the United States’s energy dominance goals. SpaceSAF, with 4 percent greater energy density than super refined kerosene fuels used in liquid rockets, improves both range and payload for the growing space industry. The commissioning achievement moves the company closer to commercial production and distribution as CleanJoule’s fuels pass the last requirement in the ASTM International D4054 qualification process.

The commissioning of CJ1, CleanJoule’s latest manufacturing facility being built on a 6-acre site near Salt Lake City, Utah, signifies that the plant is safe, efficient, and ready for operations. CJ1 serves a key strategic purpose for CleanJoule as it is a blueprint for additional commercial scale facilities that will create a globally-distributed, resilient fuel infrastructure network at industrial scale. Future facilities based on this blueprint will be able to scale production up to 100 million gallons per year. CleanJoule’s approach rapidly accelerates the production of its superior, viable fuels to meet rising dual-use demand.

"Building off two years of operating our pilot plant, the commissioning of CJ1 demonstrates that our production process for our superior fuels has reached industrial viability," said Mukund Karanjikar, CEO and founder, CleanJoule. “As we approach completion of the newest facility, this achievement validates our proprietary pathway and positions us to meet the aerospace and defense industries’ urgent need for abundant, domestically-produced, energy-dense alternative fuels."

CleanJoule's CycloSAF is currently undergoing ASTM International's D4054 qualification process for blending with conventional Jet A/A-1 fuel. CleanJoule’s synthetic blending component utilizes abundant biomass as feedstock and its innovative approach addresses the aerospace and defense sectors’ need for superior performance that also protects against price volatility, foreign dependence, and supply chain risks.

“With homegrown innovation solving big, global challenges, CleanJoule is exactly the kind of company our country needs right now,” said Aaron Starks, President and CEO, 47G. “Their work is helping to decarbonize aerospace while creating jobs, supporting farmers and reducing our reliance on foreign energy. It’s a powerful example of how Utah-based solutions can fuel both national security and economic opportunity.”
