MassMutual Appoints David Long, Former Chairman and CEO of Liberty Mutual Insurance, to Its Board of Directors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MassMutual today announced it has appointed David Long, Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Mutual Insurance, to the company’s Board of Directors.

Long began his career at Liberty Mutual Insurance in 1985, being appointed President in 2010, Chief Executive Officer in 2011 and Chairman in 2013. Under his leadership as CEO, Liberty Mutual became the sixth-largest global property and casualty (P&C) insurer as Long achieved strong financial growth and stability and strategically positioned the company with major acquisitions. Long also oversaw hundreds of millions of dollars in total giving to benefit the community and the company was recognized with numerous philanthropic and workplace culture awards. In his role as Chairman, Long led the company’s board of directors, overseeing corporate activities and evaluating performance on behalf of Liberty Mutual stakeholders. He retired as Chief Executive Officer in January 2023 and as Chairman and Director in April 2025.

He also serves as a board member of Eversource Energy and Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Long earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Hartwick College and a Master of Science in Finance from Boston College. He has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Hartwick College, Bentley University and Merrimack College.
