OptiTrack Announces Revolutionary Duplex Mode Technology, Enabling Simultaneous Marker and AI-Powered Markerless Tracking

The groundbreaking solution redefines the possibilities of motion capture with unmatched maximum efficiency and precision

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OptiTrack, the global leader in 3D tracking technology, today introduced Duplex Mode™, a patent-pending innovation that allows users to capture both marker-based and markerless data simultaneously for the first time. The Duplex Mode feature allows each camera to track both methods at the same time, leveraging machine learning for markerless tracking and proven marker-based tracking – eliminating the need to choose between methods.

In collaboration with industry-leader Captury’s real-time markerless technology and OptiTrack’s precision motion cameras, Duplex Mode enables the opportunity to utilize both marker tracking and video data, maximizing motion capture (mocap) systems. The new solution allows animation teams to use markerless tracking for pre-visualization and iterative mocap in the initial stages of production or when rapid prototyping of capture is a necessity. When maximum precision is required, teams can seamlessly transition to marker-based tracking for final production, ensuring the best results at every phase of development.

Duplex Mode synchronizes reference video and motion data across every camera in an OptiTrack system, eliminating separate capture sessions and additional reference cameras – reducing costs while streamlining workflows. This innovation works seamlessly with select OptiTrack PrimeX and SlimX mocap cameras with no hardware upgrade required.

“OptiTrack continues to push the boundaries of motion capture. Duplex Mode is a testament to our commitment to advancing the industry by seamlessly integrating marker-based and markerless tracking,” said OptiTrack Executive Vice President Stephanie Hines. “Our partnership with Captury strengthens this mission. Together, we are giving creators more efficient, flexible and cost-effective motion capture solutions.”

“With our focus always on innovation, we are always looking for those key moments when the industry takes the next large leap,” said Captury CEO Patrick Moodie. “This connection with OptiTrack will bridge marker and markerless systems in a novel way. We look forward to creating a new fused experience that no one has seen before.”

The announcement of Duplex Mode follows OptiTrack’s recent Corvallis, Ore. headquarters and manufacturing facility. In Fall 2024, OptiTrack unveiled a new 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, doubling its production capacity to better meet global demand for high-quality 3D tracking solutions while reducing lead times.

Experience Duplex Mode live at GDC 2025. Visit OptiTrack Booth #S962 in San Francisco, March 19 – 21.
