FHLB Dallas and Southern Bancorp Award $12K Grant to Retiree in Mississippi

Funds Used to Replace Aging, Decrepit Roof Sheathing

SCHLATER, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With a repaired roof over her head, 63-year-old Deloris Hill is feeling at home once again. She received a $12,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas), through its member Southern Bancorp, to replace the roof sheathing on her home.

The Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) provides grants through member institutions for the repair and rehabilitation of owner-occupied housing of eligible, special-needs individuals.

“I am deeply grateful to receive this grant from FHLB Dallas and Southern Bancorp,” said Ms. Hill. “This support has allowed me to take better care of both my mother and myself, and I can’t thank them enough for the difference they’ve made in our lives.”

Ms. Hill has arthritis in her hips and knees, causing her mobility issues. Now retired, the former certified nursing assistant worked at a hospital for 27 years and currently takes care of her mother full time. The roof sheathing on her historic home in Schlater, Mississippi, had been rotten for as long as she could remember, and she could not afford the necessary repairs.

“Southern Bancorp was proud to be the financial bridge that helped Ms. Hill make much-needed repairs to her roof,” said Kenya Davenport, interim president of Southern Bancorp Community Partners. “We are grateful for the partnership with FHLB Dallas and the support of the SNAP grants, which help mission-focused institutions like us deliver impactful work to the people who need it most.”

FHLB Dallas’ Executive Vice President Bre Chapman said SNAP can have a tremendous impact on the communities FHLB Dallas’ members serve.

“Through SNAP, we are given the opportunity to give back to citizens like Ms. Hill who served their community for so many years,” said Ms. Chapman. “It is evident that a small amount of funding can make a huge difference in not just someone’s life, but their future.”
