Hunter Pence’s Healthy Planet Project and Redwood Credit Union Team Up to Beautify San Francisco School

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Redwood Credit Union recently teamed up with former San Francisco Giants All-Star Hunter Pence’s Healthy Planet Project to create a warm and welcoming space for returning Tenderloin Community Elementary School students.

“A principle I live by is plant trees you’ll never see grow,” Hunter Pence says. "It takes all of us. It takes a community. It’s a great privilege to be able to leave something beautiful behind for these kids and our city.”

About 30 RCU volunteers, along with representatives from Reimagining San Francisco and the California Academy of Sciences, stepped up to the plate to complete the schoolyard restoration service project on August 13 in San Francisco. They pitched in to plant trees, remove broken furniture and trash, and prune plants. They also handed out free compost.

“A principle I live by is plant trees you’ll never see grow,” Pence says, touting the benefits of green spaces on the well-being and academic achievement of students. “It takes all of us. It takes a community. It’s a great privilege to be able to leave something beautiful behind for these kids and our city.”

The Healthy Planet Project aims to unite communities to create a healthier environment, clean up neighborhoods, and practice sustainable living to fight climate change and reduce our carbon footprint, which aligns with RCU’s own mission.

“At RCU, we are committed to passionately serving the best interests of our Members, team members, and communities,” says Matt Martin, RCU’s SVP of Community & Government Relations. “Improving green spaces has such a positive social impact on the students, the teachers, and their families, as well as the city as a whole, and we’re honored to be a part of that.”

Last year, the organization, launched by Pence and his wife Alexis, completed six community service projects, with 4,950 square feet of habitat restored, 950 gallons of trash removed, and 859 plants tended and planted, including 38 trees.
