Michael Hill Jeweller launches gold recycling program, Re:cycle, in Canada

The Re:cycle program allows customers to turn in their old gold jewellery in exchange for vouchers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, leading fine jeweller, Michael Hill is announcing the launch of its gold recycling program in Canada titled Re:cycle. The jeweller is encouraging Canadians to give life to their old loves by recycling any broken, old, or no longer worn gold jewellery pieces in exchange for their value* on a Michael Hill gift card, to purchase a new piece online or in-store.

Due to the inherent nature of precious jewellery materials, precious metals used to craft jewellery can be refined and recycled repeatedly, without losing their value or purity. To focus on the renewal and circularity of existing precious metals and products, Michael Hill is implementing a new sustainable jewellery ecosystem as part of the company’s ongoing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals and sustainability commitment.

"How we source and manufacture our products impacts our planet," says Daniel Bracken, Chief Executive Officer of Michael Hill. "Expanding the Re:cycle program into the Canadian market will allow us to work with our customers to make a wider impact and help us achieve a fully sustainable, responsible and circular product line by 2030."

To get involved in the gold recycling program, customers can either choose to pick up a free Re:cycle kit from any Michael Hill store or order it online through Michael Hill’s dedicated gold recycling website.

Once the gold pieces are sent to Michael Hill’s support office, they are assessed and valued by Michael Hill’s experts using in-house technology. Customers are then offered a Michael Hill gift card in exchange or have their pieces shipped back to them free of charge.

For more information on Michael Hill’s Re:cycle program, please visit https://recycle.michaelhill.com/en-CA/, a local Michael Hill store, or follow Michael Hill on Instagram @michaelhillj.

* Michael Hill determines the true gold value using a method called “X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis”. This is a specialized x-ray that can determine the gold percentage of jewellery pieces. Michael Hill then uses the gold percentage and the weight of the jewellery to calculate the amount of “pure gold” in a piece. Once Michael Hill has all the information, it applies the current market rate for gold to the resulting pure gold weight to provide a quote.
