Northwell Health’s Dr. Chethan Sathya named to Modern Healthcare’s 40 Under 40

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Northwell Health's Chethan Sathya, MD, MSc, director of Northwell's Center for Gun Violence Prevention (CGVP) and pediatric trauma surgeon at Cohen Children's Medical Center, has been recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of its 40 Under 40 for 2024 honorees. This honor acknowledges the health care industry's rising stars aged 40 and under who contribute to a culture of innovation and help their organizations achieve their goals. Dr. Sathya's profile and the other featured honorees can be read here.

“I am honored and thankful to be among so many other esteemed peers,” said Dr. Sathya. “Through innovative research, community partnerships and ongoing advocacy, I am proud that Northwell has been able to prioritize gun violence prevention as a system, unite others within the health care industry thanks to the inspirational leadership of our CEO, Michael Dowling, and work towards evidence-based solutions and redefine gun violence as a public health crisis. This collaborative effort is only successful because of our incredible Center for Gun Violence Prevention team, the hundreds of frontline champions working day and night and our community partners vowing to help prevent and care for those affected by guns.”

Dr. Sathya is responsible for the health system’s expansive approach to firearm injury prevention. As New York State’s largest health system, Northwell has taken a public health approach to gun violence prevention since 2019, focusing on critical areas such as research, medical education, clinical screening, advocacy and community engagement. Dr. Sathya was awarded $1.4 million from the National Institutes of Health to study gun violence prevention and implement a first-of-its-kind protocol to universally screen those at risk of firearm injury.

“The epidemic of gun violence is a major public health issue and we should all be embarrassed by the fact that guns are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents. Changes requires the committed support and advocacy of all – business and industry leaders, government and community groups,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell. “On behalf of our 85,000 Northwell team members, we congratulate Dr. Sathya on this honor and leadership around this important issue.”

Furthermore, Dr. Sathya spearheaded the formation of the National Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Hospitals and Health Systems, in which hospitals and health systems can learn about gun violence prevention from experts, have open dialogue, develop best practices as well as implement and evaluate strategies to prevent firearm accidents and injuries.

A powerful voice for firearm injury prevention as a surgeon with firsthand experience treating children in the operating room, Dr. Sathya offers a unique perspective and harbors a deep-rooted passion for advocating for the children and families affected by gun violence. He helps organize Northwell’s annual Gun Violence Prevention Summit. Now in its fifth year, the next Forum is slated for February 27 and is open to registration here or by visiting: preventgunviolence.com.

Dr. Sathya often speaks across the globe about gun violence prevention, interventions, research and efforts. Most recently, he returned from Davos, Switzerland, where he championed global violence prevention with a focus on firearms. And in March, he will speak at SXSW, participating in a panel titled “The No. 1 Killer of Kids in the US? Guns.”
