Fort Meade Named 2023 Great American Defense Community

Installation was One of Five Communities to Receive Competitive National Award

WARWICK, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Every two years, select installations hold a community covenant signing to reinforce commitment to their residents, surrounding region, and nation. The recent celebration at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland was a significant milestone as Fort Meade was one of five communities in the United States to receive the competitive 2023 Great American Defense Community (GADC) distinction.

Led by Garrison Commander Col. Michael Sapp, Fort Meade, which is home to all six branches of the military and Maryland’s largest employer, continuously strives to be a great community for residents and partner to local organizations. Following the 3Cs Culture: consideration, caring and community – Fort Meade is steadfast in its pledge to providing support to the Nation, which represents the commitment made by service members, government civilians, and their families.

With a large focus on community and proven track record, Fort Meade was selected by the Association of Defense Communities as a Great Defense Community, due to their successful partnerships and initiatives. This includes the expansion of Route 175, the intergovernmental support agreement with Howard County, and the renovation of the historic Kuhn Hall – an 11-year planning and fundraising process – into a state-of-the-art Education and Resiliency Center, which provides important wellness support services.

“None of this is possible without the partnership of the Fort Meade Community Covenant, which represents regional partners and continues to provide an abundance of impactful initiatives in and around our community,” said Brittney Dabney, Operations Director for Corvias Property Management at Fort Meade.

More About the Program:

Launched in 2016, the GADC program, is made possible through Association of Defense Communities’ partnership with United Services Automobile Association (USAA). The distinction includes a competitive nomination process and recognizes communities that improve the quality of life for military residents and even neighboring military installations, through educational and employment opportunities and collaboration.

This year’s, GADC is focused on areas such as education, innovation, workforce development, entrepreneurship, and young service member support.

“It's no surprise Army leadership, County executives, and more than 60 other guests showed their support for this community. Our Corvias team is honored to work with Army leadership, the Fort Meade Community Covenant, and others to continue enriching the lives of our residents,” said Dabney.
