Sanborn Analysis Supports A New Approach to Mapping Poverty Nationwide

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Economic Innovation Group (EIG) has released a major report: "Advancing Economic Development in Persistent-Poverty Communities" that finds a larger base of persistent poverty across the nation than previously estimated.

The research found that persistent geographic poverty is 72 percent larger by population than current county-based measurement. The report concludes that more direct development-related funding and customized policy solutions are needed to address the challenges of persistent-poverty communities.

“The work aims to advance a more precise way to measure persistent poverty that brings the full scale of the challenge and its true geography and demography into focus,” said August Benzow, Research Lead, EIG.

In support of the research, The Sanborn Map Company’s (Sanborn) AppGeo Division and its Spatial Analytics Team worked with EIG to identify, classify, and map the spatial relationships within their persistent poverty database.
