Ambu Named One of 2022’s ‘Health Care Heroes’ by The Daily Record of Maryland

COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ambu, the world leader in single-use endoscopy, announced today The Daily Record of Maryland has selected the company as one of 2022’s “Health Care Heroes” honoring individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on the quality of health care within the state.

Ambu was honored in the “Advancements and Innovation in Health Care” category for its development of the Ambu Bag, an iconic resuscitator that was invented more than six decades ago and has helped more than 45 million people breathe in the last 10 years alone. The winners were selected by an outside panel of health care leaders. The Daily Record is a leading legal and business publication in Maryland.

“We are proud to be recognized as one of The Daily Record’s Health Care Heroes for an invaluable device that is saving lives around the world as we speak,” said Ambu President Steven Block. “The Ambu Bag is a crucial piece of equipment found in ambulances and throughout hospitals. When the COVID-19 global pandemic struck, Ambu Bags became a constant on the front line in intensive care units around the world. The resuscitator has also won newfound purpose helping to revive overdose victims throughout the opioid crisis.”

Extraordinary efforts

Other organizations that were recognized in the Advancements and Innovation in Health Care category included, Johns Hopkins Healthcare Solutions, University of Maryland Medical Center, University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, Sheppard Pratt, one of the oldest private psychiatric hospitals in the country, and health care incubator 1501 Health.

“The 2022 Health Care Heroes lead, innovate, serve their communities and mentor no matter what challenges they face. Their extraordinary efforts, particularly over the past two years, are nothing less than remarkable,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, Senior Group Publisher of The Daily Record. “Health care professionals should always be celebrated, but this year it is more critical than ever to give every one of them a huge thank you for helping to keep us healthy.”

Single-Use endoscopes

In addition to inventing the Ambu Bag, Ambu is known for introducing the world’s first flexible single-use bronchoscope 13 years ago and, since then, single-use bronchoscopes have been widely adopted in the ICU and in the OR. The main advantages of single-use devices are that each patient is treated with a clean device – for improved patient safety – and that patient-ready devices are readily available.

The company has quickly expanded the number of endoscopes it sells from pulmonology into new endoscopy segments over the last 18 months, receiving U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510K clearance for a rhinolaryngoscope in ENT, a cystoscope in urology, and a duodenoscope and gastroscope in gastroenterology. In May, Ambu announced that Ambu® aScopeTM 5 Broncho, its fifth generation single-use sterile bronchoscopes, received European regulatory clearance.

1.5 million patients

Last year, more than 1.5 million patients globally were treated with an Ambu single-use endoscope, a reach greater than all other single-use endoscopy competitors combined and a 41 percent increase by volume over the previous year. Over the next three years, Ambu plans to launch additional new single-use endoscopy products including a fifth-generation bronchoscope that will empower thoracic surgeons and interventional pulmonologists in the bronchoscopy suite. Ambu also makes monitors, EEG electrodes, and resuscitators.

In addition to the Daily Record award, Ambu has been recognized as an innovator and was named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2022.

In 2021, Ambu won recognition for its product innovation and design excellence. It received a Global New Product Innovation Award in the advanced visualization market from Frost & Sullivan, a global consulting firm that honors companies it deems to be at the innovation and growth forefront of their respective industries. Its duodenoscope and cystoscope, meanwhile, were honored with Red Dot design awards, selected by an international jury of 50 specialists from a wide range of business sectors.
