MINNEAPOLIS--()--Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. is pleased to announce that Tim Marx has joined the firm as Counsel in its Real Estate Finance/Affordable Housing, Regulatory & Government Relations, and Nonprofit Corporation practices.

Marx has nearly 40 years of public service including a decade as president and CEO of Catholic Charities. Throughout his career he has practiced law, served as a public official (including as City Attorney and Deputy Mayor of Saint Paul and as Commissioner of the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency), and provided nonprofit leadership as Executive Director of New York City-based Breaking Ground, a nation-leading provider of housing for the formerly homeless. Marx has a long record of service with nonprofit and civic organizations. He currently serves on the boards of Fairview Health Services and the National Alliance to End Homelessness and was recently appointed by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to serve on a Working Group to provide recommendations on implementing the recent change to the City Charter establishing a “strong mayor” form of government.

“Returning to the practice of law was not on my radar as I considered an ‘encore’ career, but Winthrop’s entrepreneurial culture, creative outside of the box approaches, and dedication to a healthy, vital community excite me about joining this team,” Marx said. “I learned in my previous roles that it takes a creative combination of public, private, and philanthropic resources to advance efforts that matter most to our community. In my new role, I will support the talented and dedicated Winthrop & Weinstine team as we serve our clients and the broader community.”

Over the course of his career, Marx has helped build coalitions and bridge divides to advance economic and business vitality, address complex social problems like homelessness and poverty, and promote racial and social justice — all by working with leaders at all levels in government, business, civic, nonprofit, and philanthropic interests.

“It’s nearly impossible to match the experience and perspective Tim brings to our Firm, having served and advocated for those most in need in our community throughout his entire career,” said Tami Diehm, president of Winthrop & Weinstine. “His unique background and decades of experience give him an exciting depth and breadth of knowledge that will be of tremendous value to our team as well as to the clients and communities we serve.”

Michael Goar, President and CEO of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis commented, “Tim led Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis for nearly a decade, through a period of extraordinary need. A true servant leader, Tim was a strong advocate for our most vulnerable neighbors. I am grateful for the example of his leadership and his dedication to our community.”

Marx’s role with Winthrop & Weinstine will extend his record of service, bolster Winthrop & Weinstine’s practice to achieve even better outcomes and contribute positive momentum to the firm and the Twin Cities community.
