Akumina Sponsors the 2022 State of the Global Digital Workplace Research Report, Revealing That Only 9% of Employees Now Go to the Office 5 Days a Week

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Akumina, a leading global Employee Experience Platform (EXP), released the 2022 State of the Digital Workplace and Modern Intranet report, uncovering the latest global workplace trends.

In conjunction with digital workplace leaders, Akumina launched the research survey in the Fall of 2021 to gather industry insight and provide the most recent digital workplace data trends. With professionals weighing in from all over the globe, common themes that were found included measuring modern intranet ROI and effectiveness, increasing employee adoption, “must-have” intranet features for 2022, components that create successful digital workplace strategies, and a decision-making shift through a remote revolution.

“We saw the need for updated information about trends in the market,” said Samantha Kenney, Global Vice President of Marketing for Akumina. “Most reports were completed in 2019 or 2020, making it difficult for businesses to make decisions and stay ahead of the constant shifts. The response that we’ve seen from this report has been tremendous.

Key findings in the research also went on to give insight into the current state of the enterprise working world around the globe:

  • Only 9% of employees work in-office on a daily basis, while at the same time over 77% of employees state a digital workplace increases their productivity
  • 66% of workers report their company uses a digital workplace strategy with another 20% in the process of implementing one
  • Employees are more likely to use tools not adopted by their company when there is no digital workplace strategy in place
  • The top reason employees use their intranet or digital workplace is to find information, while over 46% state that findability of information is their top challenge
  • Current digital workplaces don’t offer a strong focus on building culture, onboarding and offboarding employees, and providing personalized and individualized experiences

With a large portion of the workforce no longer in the office five days per week, a digital workplace has rallied to the top of the many executive priority lists. The report found that 54% of respondents work remotely at least three times per week, with similar numbers reporting that the approach would remain in place indefinitely.

“Online workplaces for employees are evolving at a rate that is similar to the mobile boom in 2008 that started with the release of the iPhone,” said David Maffei, President and CRO of Akumina. “Businesses are trying to move so quickly that they identify what their employees need as these systems are being built.”

The largest number of respondents noted that Alerts (office closings, reminders, etc.) was the top feature missing from their modern intranet, at 39%. Other missing features included social groups, upcoming meetings and events, or updates from company leadership.

While most organizations still value ‘ROI’ as the best measure of success, a shift is being made to employee satisfaction and adoption, with over 57% and 43%, respectively.

“Our end game and the real value is more qualitative than it is quantitative and really comes down to our happy and connected employee,” said Betsy Codding, a report collaborator, and Head of Digital Communication and Multimedia at MassMutual.
