WHAT: Consumer shopping behavior data for Super Saturday (December 18, 2021)

WHEN: The ICSC Super Saturday Survey was conducted online from December 10–12, 2021 with a demographically representative U.S. sample of 1, 010 respondents.

RESULTS:

  • 86% of U.S. adults plan to shop and spend money during the next two weeks.
  • On Super Saturday alone, 78% of consumers - 200 million people - plan to shop and purchase goods.
  • 59% of adults plan to visit a mall or other shopping center on Super Saturday. Among those planning to visit a shopping center, intend to shop (61%), dine (44%) or see a movie (23%).
  • The top reasons for shopping during the days leading up to Christmas, because there are more people to buy gifts for (40%) and to take advantage of retail promotions (35%).
  • Lingering supply-chain issues will impact what shoppers buy over the next two weeks and 67% of them agree that their remaining holiday purchases will largely depend on what they can find and take immediately.
  • 62% of shoppers agree that if they are unable to find the right holiday gifts within the next two weeks due to product unavailability, they will purchase gift cards instead.
