Black & Veatch’s Randy Castro Elected to National Academy of Construction

Federal services leader to join elite group of construction industry experts

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Black & Veatch proudly announces that Randy Castro, leader of the company’s federal business and a retired U.S. Army major general, has been elected to the 2021 class of the National Academy of Construction (NAC).

Castro, president of Black & Veatch’s Special Projects Corp. since 2018, joins eight other new members of the 22-year-old NAC, an influential professional organization of construction industry leaders who include former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and U.S. military leadership. Hundreds of additional prospects were considered by the NAC, which is dedicated to leveraging its experience and talent to enhance the industry’s strength and the nation’s well-being.

Castro joined Black & Veatch after a decades-long career in government service, infrastructure development and project management. He was commanding general of the USACE’s South Atlantic and Pacific Ocean divisions, as well as commander of the Maneuver Support Center at Missouri’s Fort Leonard Wood, among other command and leadership functions. He also served as former deputy director of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which confronts weapons of mass destruction challenges and emerging threats.

At Black & Veatch, Castro has overseen an organization that traces its roots to the construction of Camp Pike, an early military facility tied to the United States’ preparation for World War I.

“I’m humbled to be selected for the National Academy of Construction at a time when our industry stands ready to transform infrastructure across the nation,” Castro said. “As we seek to accelerate the development of more sustainable, more resilient infrastructure, the experience and commitment to service of the Academy’s members provides a tremendous resource that can benefit communities everywhere.”

NAC members represent stakeholders across the construction industry’s spectrum, from business owners and designers to construction and financial managers, general and specialty contractors, attorneys, labor leaders, suppliers, and professional and trade association executives. NAC members are affiliated with such groups as the National Academy of Engineering, the Federal Facilities Council, the National Academies Board on the infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE), and the boards and advisory councils of professional societies. Many NAC members also are on corporate boards or consultants to private and public agencies.

Castro and the rest of this year’s new membership class will be recognized during the academy’s annual meeting in October in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
