Intelligent Transportation Systems Focus of New Black & Veatch eBook

Free download explores essential technologies for the creation of flexible, reliable communications networks supporting smart transportation

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The rise of digitization and smart technologies such as advanced driver-assistance systems, smart sensors and other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are transforming the world of transportation as we know it. A new eBook from Black & Veatch explores how transportation authorities are leveraging digital communications networks to build increasingly advanced ITS that can address major transportation challenges such as accidents, congestion and carbon emissions.

The free eBook, Smart Transportation: Essential Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems, looks at how transportation authorities are actively collaborating with stakeholders to build the advanced digital communication networks necessary to support ITS and increase the capacity, safety and flexibility of existing and future transportation assets.

ITS use advanced digital networks and intelligent, sensor-based infrastructure deployed in the transportation setting to create a connected, shared information environment. These systems rely on wired and wireless communications technologies to connect critical transportation and institutional elements. By integrating existing physical infrastructure with digital technologies, the communications network enables a seamless connection to individual systems even as it continues to evolve alongside future ITS innovation.

Although ITS technologies keep evolving, a flexible communication network remains a mainstay. This digital foundation comprises physical and logical layers that support applications that access and control thousands of smart devices such as sensors or cameras. These layers are most valuable when architecturally organized and standardized to ensure ITS are interoperable, scalable and secure, while remaining reliable and cost-effective.

“The convergence of the digital and physical worlds could yield safer roadways, decrease congestion, lower carbon emissions, improve traveler confidence and convenience, and yield more efficient transportation operations,” said Fred Ellermeier, vice president of Black & Veatch’s Connected Communities business. “Momentum is building and the benefits of ITS are only just now coming into full focus.”

“By focusing on citizen needs, technologies and collaboration, authorities will deploy ITS that optimize the travel experience, increase safety, and improve quality of life,” Ellermeier said.
