I-PASS Patient Safety Institute Celebrates 5 Years of Improved Patient Handoffs and Patient Safety

In five years, 100 million handoffs have been completed using the I-PASS solution

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--I-PASS Patient Safety Institute, a clinical leader in patient safety, is celebrating their five-year milestone and 100 million handoffs. Founded in 2016, I-PASS Institute was formed to leverage the successful, existing I-PASS methodology and create a scalable, repeatable process for healthcare organizations to successfully manage care handoffs.

Developed by clinicians for clinicians, I-PASS has evolved into a communication blueprint consisting of three digital platforms—Learning, Measurement, and EHR Integration—making it easier for institutions to implement and reduce communication failures during patient handoffs. To date, the I-PASS Bundle has prevented 3 million major and minor harm events and is currently implemented in more than 100 institutions.

“As clinicians the care we provide is only as good as the information we pass on from one shift to the next. By systematizing that process, I-PASS has created a solution for sharing critical information in a consistent, reliable, and seamless manner,” said Chris Landrigan, MD, MPH, Co-Founder of the I-PASS Institute and Chief of General Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital. “The results speak for themselves as healthcare providers that have implemented the I-PASS Bundle have seen a 75% reduction in both major and minor patient harm events.”

After initial success in pediatric residency programs, I-PASS progressed as a transition method between doctors, nurses, and family members to aid in closed-loop communication. Today, I-PASS is also being used for numerous transitions of care. As the I-PASS Institute sets goals for the next five years, the organization aims to expand from hospital departments and Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, to nursing home care transitions and into telehealth programs, among others.

“As the continuum of care grows in complexity, we will continue to see even greater importance on the transitions of care. As a result, the role of a handoffs will become increasingly critical to providing safe, patient-centric care,” said Bill Floyd, CEO of I-PASS Institute. “We’re confident that the I-PASS Institute will serve as the standard of care helping healthcare professionals safely and successfully manage patient care transitions.”
