US Economy Creates 379,000 Jobs in February

Firms urged to check the skills of potential recruits before hiring

TRUMBULL, Conn.--()--US firms are embarking on a recruitment drive as Covid numbers fall and confidence returns to the economy. Questionmark, the online assessment provider, is urging hirers to ensure that they are bringing in people with skills to boost productivity.

The US economy created 379,000 jobs in February. Some 355,000 of these jobs were within the leisure and hospitality sector. Economists predict that the newly approved stimulus package of $1.9tn will fuel further economic growth and add to the job creation total.1

Before making the final decision on who to hire, Questionmark is encouraging hirers to ask the following three questions:

  1. Do candidates have the skills they claim – 78% of applicants admit to lying during the recruitment process.2 When scaling up for a busy period, recruits must be able to do what they say they can.
  2. Do applicants have skills fit for the future – across all industries, the skills workers require are changing. For example, hospitality workers may need to manage digital purchases. Employers should ensure that new starters have crucial skills that may be missing from the existing workforce.
  3. Do potential recruits have the right attitude –recruits must be able to quickly become part of the team. Certain characteristics will indicate whether they are likely to contribute positively to the culture.

By measuring the skills of candidates before making the final hiring decision, employers can make a more informed decision about who to bring into the team. Assessments indicate whether potential recruits can do what they say they can and if they are likely to have the right attitude for the job.

Lars Pedersen, CEO of Questionmark, said: “As the economy begins to recover, employers will need to scale up quickly. The quality of the recruits they bring into the team will help determine whether they can ride the wave of recovery and take advantage of the new opportunities it presents.

“Now more than ever, employers must be confident in the recruitment decisions they are making.”
