Motus CEO Craig Powell Appointed Chairman of Youth Wrestling Organization Beat the Streets New England

Groundbreaking Regional Wrestling Non-Profit Building Powerhouse Board as it Extends to Serve New Communities

BOSTON--()--Entrepreneur Craig Powell has been appointed as Chairman of the Board for non-profit Beat the Streets New England (BTSNE), a new coalition formed from the merger of Beat the Streets (Providence) and Boston Youth Wrestling that’s making history as the nation’s first regional youth wrestling organization. In his role, Powell will be building the Board with powerhouse leaders from across New England.

BTSNE today delivers youth wrestling programs to underserved communities at 27 sites across the New England community. The organization helps students develop a goal-oriented mindset through on the mat trainings that translate into off the mat life skills. Its programs are designed to encourage a desire for excellence, respect, teamwork, leadership, integrity, and perseverance through the instruction of quality wrestling programs. Coupled with off the mat resources to develop students’ full academic potential, these programs open doors to prestigious universities for a diverse group of young women and men. The organization delivered 500,000 hours of student engagement and 200,000 hours of skills development for trainers in its program in 2020 and has distributed 25,000 meals since the pandemic shutdowns in March of last year.

“The skills young girls and boys learn on the mat – grit, confidence, self-reliance, drive to succeed – they all translate to life, education and business outside of wrestling. Many of the kids that go through the program go on to college and even return later in life as trainers themselves. That strong community and culture of success is the real power of the sport,” said Powell. “I’ve been involved with Beat the Streets for nearly eight years and have had the privilege of witnessing the community grow and evolve in size and diversity. We have ambitious financial goals for the year ahead and I’m confident we can achieve them with the team we’re putting in place at BTSNE as we expand throughout New England.”

Powell is a former high school All-American wrestler that went on to serve as a two-time team Captain at Brown University, where he earned the Cliff Stevenson Outstanding Leadership Award for his contributions off the mat. He currently serves as CEO of the mobile workforce management technology company Motus. Powell is a founding member of the Beat the Streets Foundation and a board member for JVS, a nonprofit that helps individuals from diverse communities to find employment and build careers, while partnering with employers to hire, develop, and retain workforces. He has also served as the chairman for Your Grateful Nation, an organization focused on helping U.S. military Special Operations personnel and veterans to succeed in corporate America, and the I Have a Dream Foundation, an education reform organization that works with students in under-resourced public schools or housing projects.

“Craig has been a core part of Beat the Streets for several years and is the ideal teammate to have as Chairperson while we continue to develop our Board,” said Bior Guigni, Chief Executive Officer for BTSNE. “Beat the Streets’ innovative programming is impacting more students and mentors than ever before and supporting wrestling as the fastest growing sport nationally for girls at the high school and collegiate level. We look forward to this next phase of youth development through wrestling with Craig and the Board’s expert guidance as we engage more youth and support new communities.”

In addition to Powell, the Board for BTSNE includes Co-Founders Jose Valenzuela of Boston Youth Wrestling and Billy Watterson of Beat the Streets Providence, Kevin McCarthy of Intex, Vince Domestico of Northwestern Mutual, Joe Mocco of Motus, and Nic Miragliuolo of Social Finance Inc. BTSNE is looking to raise $750,000 for its programs in 2021 and expects to raise $3.5 million over the next four years.
