Innovative builder and real estate enterprise breaks ground on mixed-use development in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Suffolk, one of the most innovative and successful builders and real estate enterprises in the country, has begun construction on 1629 Market Street. Selected by Strada to provide preconstruction and construction services, 1629 Market Street is a 600,000 square foot project at the corner of Brady and Market Street in San Francisco’s up-and-coming Mid-Market neighborhood.
Designed by BDE Architecture and Form 4 Architecture, this mixed-use development will consist of three nine-story residential buildings with approximately 443 apartment units over a shared below-grade parking garage as well as a five-story residential building with 96 affordable units. The project includes 15,000 square feet of amenity space and common areas, 9,000 square feet of street-level retail space, and 23,400 square feet of privately-owned public open space. The project also includes demolition of the existing Local 38 Pipefitters Union Hall and construction of a new 30,000 square-foot replacement Union Hall on the site. The first phase of construction is slated to be completed in early 2022 and will offer both market-rate and 96 supportive housing units for formerly homeless individuals which is a co-development with the non-profit Community Housing Partnership. The project also features more than a half-acre of Privately Owned Publicly Accessible Open Space to serve as a community amenity.
“We are honored to be working with Strada on this project, which will leave a meaningful impact on our community,” said Mike DiNapoli, General Manager of Suffolk Northern California. “As the need for high-quality affordable housing continues to grow, we are committed to doing our part to bring these important projects to life.”
This project builds on the momentum Suffolk has had in the San Francisco Bay Area, particularly with affordable housing developments. Across the country, Suffolk is recognized as an innovative builder with a strong reputation for excellence. Earlier this year, Suffolk announced an expansion from its core business of construction into additional vertical service lines to create a fully-integrated platform that adds value for clients across the entire building lifecycle. The company also launched a new brand identity to reflect its broader future ambitions and unique position and capabilities in the industry.
