“We are very fortunate to live in a city as diverse as ours,” said Darren Green, President of the Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council.

“We celebrate our community and the progress we’ve made in promoting inclusion, human rights and respect for diversity, while we also recognize there is so much more work to do to eliminate racial discrimination in our society,” Green said.

“Our annual March 21st event in Hamilton, postponed due to COVID-19, will go online instead this Saturday, June 20, to talk about systemic racism faced in Canada by indigenous and racialized people. Expect speeches about demilitarizing and reallocating police funding, spoken word and other entertainment. Bring a snack to your computer desk: unfortunately, there is no multicultural food fair this year.”

The celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will be streamed live from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Hamiltonsteelworkersareacouncil/?ref=bookmarks and on Twitter at https://twitter.com/home.

“We have witnessed the constructive actions in response to events happening in our country and the United States over the last number of weeks,” Green said. “We want to have a conversation in an open and welcoming forum where everyone feels comfortable discussing what needs to be done going forward as a community.”
