Steelworkers Mourn Loss of Life, Stand in Solidarity With Nova Scotians

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--United Steelworkers (USW) members in Nova Scotia and across Canada grieve and stand in solidarity with the families, friends and communities of the victims of last weekend’s mass shooting.

“Our hearts are broken, all of us, our members, our friends, our families,” said Mark Arsenault, President of Steelworkers Local 5319, one of four USW local unions that represent workers in communities across Nova Scotia.

“It’s so hard to put into words, how this is affecting our communities. It’s a very sombre, very sad time,” said Arsenault, a resident of Elmsdale.

“We’re devastated by the senseless violence that has shattered the lives of so many of our friends, our neighbours, our fellow Nova Scotians. We are grieving with them and we will stand with them in confronting this unimaginable tragedy,” he said.

“We are shocked and saddened by these terrible events,” said Marty Warren, USW Atlantic Canada and Ontario Director.

“Our hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones. We mourn with them, as we struggle to understand what happened. Our members and our union will do everything we can to support these families and communities, now and into the future,” Warren said.

“The tragic loss of so many innocent lives affects all Canadians,” said Ken Neumann, USW National Director. “United Steelworkers members across the country extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends who are grieving such incredible loss.”
