Spirit Golf Association Announces 2019 Amateur Tournament

HOUSTON--()--The Spirit Golf Association plans to hold the next Spirit International Amateur Championship on November 4–10, 2019, at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. Two men and two women—national amateur champions from 20 countries—are selected by their country’s golf federation to compete in a unique team, better ball format. These “stars of tomorrow” compete for Olympic-like medals and have an international village living experience at Camp Olympia, located adjacent to Whispering Pines Golf Club. The tournament, known as The Spirit, is supported by 50 tournament sponsors and 400 volunteers.

Houston philanthropist and Spirit Golf Association board chairman Corbin Robertson, Jr., commented, “The Spirit amateur championship is a highly valued event supporting international amateur golf and several health-related charities. We are grateful to our members, sponsors and player alumni who help make it the finest amateur golf event in the world.”

Established in 2001, The Spirit is a biennial event that alternates tournament years with the World Amateur Team Championships. A recent global survey conducted by the Spirit Golf Association found that the Spirit tournament and Whispering Pines Golf Course received 98% favorable ratings. Former players and team captains recommended adding new sponsors to underwrite televising the competition and adding a pro-am event. Noteworthy former Spirit players include Paula Creamer, Jason Day, Brooke Henderson, Martin Kaymer, Lorena Ochoa, Lexi Thompson, Charl Schwartzel, Brandt Snedeker, Yani Tseng and Danny Willett.

The Golf Digest 2017–18 America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses list ranks Whispering Pines as the #1 course in Texas and #55 in the USA.
