Tourism Booming in Portugal’s Vinho Verde Region

Tasting Rooms & Hotels Welcome Travelers

NEW YORK--()--Wine tourism is booming in Vinho Verde. Many of the region’s top producers have renovated their wineries and estates, adding boutique hotels, spas and tasting rooms for all types of tourists. These wineries are located throughout the region.

Vinho Verde is Portugal’s largest wine region. Located on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula in northern Portugal, it’s known mostly for its exceptional white wines.

Quinta da Lixa's new boutique hotel & spa Monverde located in the historic town of Amarante offers luxury accommodations, soothing spa treatments, fine dining and wine tastings. Guests can even make their own wine on the premises.

Soalheiro winery, one of the most prestigious in Vinho Verde, recently finished renovations on the estate adding a beautiful new tasting room overlooking the vineyards. Guests can enjoy a wine tasting paired with delicious smoked pork sausage from their neighboring property Quinta de Folga.

Quinta da Aveleda, one of the oldest wineries in Vinho Verde, is something out of a fairytale. Their award-winning gardens and parks—dotted with peacocks, goats and tiny little “fairy houses”—are almost as famous as their award-winning wines. Guests can schedule a tour of the grounds, a wine tasting and/or lunch on the estate.

Quinta da Calçada’s Relais & Chateaux Hotel Casa da Calçada features 1 star Michelin restaurant Largo do Paço. Alternatively, Pousada Viana do Castelo offers history and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and sea.

Though many Vinho Verde wineries are open to the public, most require advanced notice of visitors. Activities and accommodations can usually be arranged through the winery’s website.
