SAN MATEO, Calif. & BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, PokitDok announced it is joining CommonWell Health Alliance® as a General Member to help break down barriers to nationwide data exchange. CommonWell, a non-profit trade association, is dedicated to the simple vision that health data should be available regardless of where care occurs.
According to Black Book, 94 percent of America’s providers, health care agencies, patients and payers persist as meaningfully unconnected.[i] In an effort to improve the status quo, CommonWell and its members have committed to using their diverse experience across the health care continuum to produce and deploy real-world, cross-vendor interoperability services that will contribute to improved health care delivery and outcomes for providers and the people they serve.
CommonWell and its members are actively deploying these interoperability services, which are now live at 4,400 provider sites nationwide, ranging from large acute hospitals to rural specialty practices. CommonWell services include person enrollment, record location, patient identification and linking, and data query and retrieval across the health care continuum. Unique to CommonWell, its services aim to solve the patient linking and identity problems at scale. Additionally, CommonWell members have access to a working, functioning record locator service, allowing providers to find health records associated with a patient, no matter where the care is delivered. Services are built into the software by CommonWell member companies to help providers maintain their existing workflow.
“PokitDok shares our vision that health data should be accessible to providers and the people they serve,” said Nick Knowlton, Membership Committee chair for CommonWell Health Alliance and vice president at Brightree. “By adding PokitDok to our diverse membership, we can continue to break down the barriers that have stood in the way of nationwide data exchange.”
The technology infrastructure in health care, established decades ago, was never designed to support consumer transactions at scale. It was created based on hardware and software systems that existed at the time, customized to support an insurance driven business model. In the age of the empowered consumer, who shops for medical care, coupled with the prevalence of connected health care, institutions across the industry are modernizing their workflow with technology that supports new business processes like payment optimization, authentication and patient identity management.
“Application Programming Interfaces are central to interoperability in health care,” said Lisa Maki, co-founder and CEO, PokitDok. “Our mission to unlock and secure data is fundamentally aligned with CommonWell Health Alliance. We hope to contribute to existing interoperability efforts with our clearinghouse, identity management and scheduling APIs, as well as new expertise in security and patient payments, both integral to supporting the business of health.”
PokitDok joins the Alliance with the intention to contribute to enhancing nationwide interoperability in health care. To date, more than 40 companies are members of CommonWell.
PokitDok powers interoperable health care transactions. Its APIs facilitate eligibility checks, claims submissions, appointment scheduling, payment optimization, patient identity management and other business processes. Hospital systems, digital health startups, systems integrators and telehealth companies use PokitDok’s development platform to improve workflows, cut costs and discover business patterns with big data. PokitDok is based in San Mateo, CA and Charleston, SC and is backed by Lemhi Ventures, Rogers Venture Partners, McKesson Ventures, New Atlantic Ventures (NAV.VC) and Subtraction Capital.
