Viewics Chosen by Pediatric Laboratory Utilization Guidance Service (PLUGS®) As Analytics Partner

Company to Support Seattle Children’s Hospital Initiative to Help Drive Laboratory Test Utilization Management in Clinical Laboratories

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & SEATTLE--()--The Pediatric Laboratory Utilization Guidance Service (PLUGS®) is an initiative from Seattle Children’s Hospital that helps clinical laboratories and practitioners decrease costs and errors associated with unnecessary laboratory testing. PLUGS has chosen Viewics as its analytics solution to further support its members and partners in driving test utilization initiatives. PLUGS will collaborate with Viewics to guide and inform its product development, resulting in the ability for members to have sophisticated test utilization management analytics and dashboards to enhance clinical, operational and financial outcomes.

“PLUGS is a leader in test utilization and has a proven methodology and process to drive significant cost savings and quality improvement for hospitals and health systems,” said Tim Kuruvilla, Viewics Chief Commercial Officer and co-founder. “We’re excited for the opportunity to further support and enable the test utilization initiatives of our customers through this partnership.”

PLUGS is a network of approximately 50 members, including hospitals, health systems and commercial laboratories. PLUGS offers utilization management interventions to improve test ordering in both adult and pediatric settings. Forward-thinking health systems such as Mayo Clinic Health System, ARUP/University of Utah, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Intermountain Health, Cleveland Clinic are all PLUGS members. Independent laboratories, such as Prevention Genetics, Invitae, Claritas Genomics, Quest Diagnostics, and TriCore Reference Laboratories are also members, due to their aim to help their clients with utilization management problems.

“We collaborate with companies like Viewics in an effort to have impact through IT products that all our members — as well as non-members — could purchase, that would help them run their test utilization management programs,” said PLUGS co-founder Michael Astion, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director in the Department of Laboratories at Seattle Children's Hospital and clinical professor of laboratory medicine at the University of Washington. “Our goal is to have utilization management dashboards that strongly guide test utilization management programs.”

PLUGS was created to address errors in test ordering and their associated costs. PLUGS helps clinical laboratories design and implement comprehensive utilization management interventions from test order to result. PLUGS reports that on average, members who have implemented active utilization management programs report a 30% modification rate on reviewed test orders, and generally recognize a savings of approximately 10% on their total send-out bill.
