Kimco Realty Wins Multiple Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking Awards

Company recognized for parking lot lighting upgrades for second year in a row

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.--()--Kimco Realty Corp. (NYSE:KIM), the nation’s largest publicly traded owner and operator of neighborhood and community shopping centers, announced today that it has won three Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) campaign awards for largest absolute number of facility upgrades; best use of controls; and largest absolute area. Kimco previously won a LEEP award for largest absolute number of facility upgrades in 2014.

The awards program recognizes owners and managers who install highly-efficient lighting solutions in their parking facilities. The campaign and awards program is sponsored by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), the Green Parking Council (GPC), the International Parking Institute, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

“These awards demonstrate Kimco’s commitment to actively managing and improving our portfolio’s outdoor lighting systems to improve nighttime curb appeal, achieve energy savings, and enhance safety and security,” said Nate Mitten, Senior Manager of Property Standards and Improvements at Kimco Realty. “By the end of 2015, we will have our Gateway lighting controls program implemented at approximately 380 sites across the country and we aim to have all remaining sites completed by the end of 2016. Our Illumi-Nation LED lighting upgrade program has also been successfully launched resulting in over 100 LED upgrades by the end of this year and is expected to keep a similar pace into 2016.”

Kimco received the best use of controls award for its innovative LED lighting and wireless lighting controls upgrade of the parking lot at 280 Metro Center in Colma, Calif. As a result of the improvements, Kimco is achieving a 56 percent savings from the reduced fixture wattage while still dramatically improving the quality of the site lighting. The wireless control solution allows for additional savings due to after-hours dimming and motion-activated control of individual light fixtures. Beyond energy savings, the control system enhances safety and security at the center due to motion sensing capabilities that can actively deter unwanted activity after hours.

“The positive feedback we’ve received on this project at 280 Metro from both our tenants and the community at large, plus the recognition by the LEEP campaign confirm that we heading in the right direction with our new Illumi-Nation program,” Nate Mitten explained.
