SmartCloud Secures Strategic Investment from Rockwell Automation

Big Reasoning Startup Wins $3 Million Series A Financing

BEDFORD, Mass.--()--SmartCloud, Inc. announced today that it received a $3 million strategic investment from Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) to increase SmartCloud’s Big Reasoning platform applications.

“We are pleased to work with Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and information,” said Kim Mayyasi, SmartCloud CEO. “They will help reinforce our market position and mission to become a leading provider of real-time xStream reasoning solutions for mission critical environments and the Industrial Internet of Things.”

“As remote monitoring of intelligent motor controls and other Internet-connected devices grows in demand, we believe that SmartCloud’s technology and expertise will help us analyze data more efficiently to support real-time decision making using predictive analytics,” said Gary Pearsons, Rockwell Automation vice president of customer support and maintenance.

SmartCloud, founded in 2009, has developed technology that unifies stream, processing, Semantic Web, and multi-agent architectures in its CRex™ platform. “We solve the challenges of real-time data processing in Big Data environments with Big Reasoning,” said Mike Barnett, executive vice president of SmartCloud’s knowledge engineering.

“Our Big Reasoning platform is the next generation of Big Data technology, namely using artificial intelligence to control complex actions in real time. Depending on the environment, our agent architectures can deploy reasoning power anywhere it’s needed – on devices such as smart meters and smart phones, a company’s servers, or in the cloud,” said Steven Fraleigh, SmartCloud’s chief technology officer.

SmartCloud gained notice in the Smart Grid market when it implemented the nation’s first situation awareness system to monitor North America’s bulk power system and alert staffs at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) about emerging situations that could impact reliability. The system takes real-time data from 30,000 data points and identifies and displays critical trends. In 2011, SmartCloud was named a GartnerCool Vendor in Energy and Utilities” for its unique technology.

“SmartCloud provides the intelligent infrastructure needed in today’s extreme mission-critical applications,” said Paul Lindenfelzer, SmartCloud’s executive vice president of sales and operations. “Working with Rockwell Automation is another significant step in the company’s evolution.”
