Univision Insights: 2010 Census Shows Hispanic Population at 50 Million Strong and Accounting for 56 Percent of U.S. Population Growth

Figures from Additional States – Including Rhode Island, South Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and the District of Columbia – Echo the Growth Trajectory of Hispanics Across the Nation

NEW YORK--()--New 2010 Census figures reaffirm the power of the U.S. Hispanic marketplace, with the latest data painting a portrait of today’s America as one where 50,477,594 Hispanics make up 16.3 percent of the nation’s population. Having grown 43 percent since the 2000 Census, the Hispanic population accounted for 56 percent of all growth in the U.S.

“For Univision the 2010 Census figures validate what we’ve known for years - Hispanics are fueling U.S. population growth and redefining the changing face of America,” said Cesar Conde, president, Univision Networks. “These figures speak to the critical role Hispanics will play in defining the future of this country. As Univision prepares to host a town hall on education with President Obama on Monday, we remain focused on critical issues, such as education, that impact the fastest growing segment of the nation.”

Based on the aggregation of the population residing in the 50 states and the District of Columbia:

  • Hispanic population growth surpassed the most recent 2008 Census projections for Hispanics in 2010 by 1.5 percent.
  • There are 50.5 million Hispanics in the United States.

2000 Census vs. 2010 Census:

  • Hispanics contributed 55.5 percent of the total U.S. population growth from 2000-2010, solidifying their position as the second largest demographic in the U.S.
  • In the last decade Hispanics accounted for 1 out of every 2 individuals added to the U.S.
  • From Census 2000-2010 the Hispanic population grew by 43 percent.
  • Hispanics are growing four times faster than the total U.S. population.
  • The Hispanic population is less concentrated than 10 years ago. In 2000, 61 percent of the Hispanic population residing in the 50 states and District of Columbia resided in just four states: California, Texas, Arizona and Florida. By 2010, that proportion had declined to 58 percent while nine states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee) saw their Hispanic populations more than double.
  • Minorities accounted for all the growth among those under 18, while Hispanics contributed nearly 74 percent of the minority growth among those under 18 in the U.S.

New State-by-State Results

The Census Bureau released this week specifically looks at the populations of Rhode Island, South Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and the District of Columbia – all which show explosive demographic growth of Hispanics. For example:

  • As the fastest growing demographic group in Rhode Island, the Hispanic population in the state grew nearly 44 percent in the last decade.
  • The Hispanic population in South Carolina more than doubled in the last 10 years and is growing faster than any other demographic in the state.
  • In West Virginia, the Hispanic population grew 81 percent since Census 2000.
  • In the last decade, Michigan’s population shrank by -0.6 percent, while the Hispanic population in the state grew nearly 35 percent.
  • In Massachusetts, the Hispanic population grew 46 percent since Census 2000. Hispanics accounted for 1 out of every 2 individuals added to the total Adult 18+ population in the state.
  • The Hispanic population in New Hampshire grew 79 percent since Census 2000. Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the state.
  • Hispanics contributed 59 percent of the minority growth in New York.
  • In Maine, the Hispanic population grew nearly 81 percent in the last decade.
  • 1 out of every 3 individuals added to the total population in the District of Columbia is of Hispanic origin.
