Evidation Launches Interactive Dermatology Cohort to Capture How Patients Manage Conditions Inside and Outside Clinical Care; Shares Preliminary Real-World Insights
Research suggests that most individuals manage certain dermatological conditions without clinical oversight, often relying on over-the-counter treatments or no treatment at all
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Evidation, the leader in direct-from-participant real-world data and health research, is announcing a new dermatology cohort and sharing preliminary insights from individuals living with dermatological conditions, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne.
The cohort, built on a direct connection to more than 100,000 individuals with chronic dermatological conditions, is designed to address gaps in understanding treatment journeys across the full continuum of care. It integrates longitudinal, multimodal data to capture how conditions are managed both within and outside clinical settings by combining participant-captured images of skin conditions, symptoms, patient-reported experiences, medication use (including over-the-counter and prescription treatments), clinical data, claims, and wearable data to provide a more complete view of treatment patterns, patient behavior, and outcomes over time.
Evidation’s preliminary insights are based on survey results from more than 78,000 individuals and show substantial disease burden across conditions, along with significant challenges navigating care and treatment options. The data show that consumer health products play a critical part in how individuals understand and manage their skin conditions.
Key takeaways include:
- Approximately 70% of individuals with acne and psoriasis surveyed are likely to be underrepresented in healthcare data due to limited or no engagement with healthcare providers.
- In a survey of individuals with acne, 80% reported not seeking care from a dermatologist or other healthcare provider in the past 12 months.
- In a survey of individuals who reported a psoriasis diagnosis, 65% reported not seeing a specialist for ongoing management of their condition.
- Among these individuals with psoriasis, many rely on over-the-counter treatments (23%) or no treatment at all (28%).
These findings highlight a broader pattern, where a significant portion of treatment and management occurs outside the healthcare system, with over-the-counter products, aesthetic services, telehealth platforms, and self-directed care playing a central role in how individuals manage skin conditions. These behaviors and choices are rarely captured through claims or electronic health record data, exposing important opportunities to better understand real-world patient journeys.
“Dermatology is quite unique because it sits at the intersection of clinical care, consumer health, and everyday behavior,” said Leslie Oley Wilberforce, CEO of Evidation. “By capturing how people actually experience and manage their conditions over time, we can view skin health beyond an isolated concern and connect it to whole-person health, creating a stronger foundation for insights and evidence generation in dermatology.”
