Getnick Law Client Receives Maximum 30 Percent Award for IRS Tax Whistleblower Case

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Getnick Law is pleased to announce that its client recently received the maximum 30 percent award for successfully developing and resolving an IRS tax whistleblower case.

The whistleblower, whose identity remains protected, reported fraud that took place at a business that was benefitting from government contract work while cheating the government out of the appropriate tax payments. As a result of the whistleblower’s efforts, the U.S. Treasury recovered approximately $11 million.

The whistleblower received the maximum award, about $3.3 million, by working closely with the Getnick Law team to make outstanding contributions to the case such as providing essential documentary evidence about the company’s financials, developing sophisticated market and damages analysis, meeting with government officials, and providing all requested assistance. Federal whistleblowers typically receive between 15 percent and 30 percent of the settlement, depending on the level of their contribution to the case.

Getnick Law partner Margaret Finerty led the Getnick Law team, which included Neil Getnick, the firm’s managing partner, and partner Richard Dircks.

“Lessons potential tax whistleblowers can learn from this matter are the importance of working with experienced whistleblower counsel, offering strong evidence, and providing the government all it needs to pursue the case,” said Finerty, a former New York City Criminal Court Judge and former Deputy Chief of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Frauds Bureau.

The resolution of this matter adds to Getnick Law’s long list of successful whistleblower representations. For example, in 2024 Getnick Law headed the representation of a lead whistleblower in an historic $263 million tax fraud settlement, who also received the 30% maximum award which was shared with the two other whistleblowers in the case.

“We have again demonstrated how whistleblowers, the government and most importantly the taxpaying public benefit from the public-private partnership that is at the core of the IRS whistleblower program and other whistleblower programs,” Getnick said.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to represent our whistleblower client, an individual of integrity who, in the face of significant personal and professional risk, initiated this matter and actively assisted in securing its successful resolution,” said Dircks.

Getnick Law commends the support and professionalism of the acting Director of the IRS Whistleblower Office, Erick Martinez, and his staff.

Getnick Law is a premier, New York-based, boutique law firm representing whistleblowers under all federal and state whistleblower laws, conducting complex investigations and litigation, and counseling commercial clients throughout the country and internationally.
