LRE Brings Sierra Pinta BESS Online, Delivering Energy Resilience to the Western Grid

Project delivers grid reliability while driving local jobs, tax revenue, and long-term community investment in Yuma County

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) today announced that its Sierra Pinta Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 112.5 megawatt (MW) / 450 megawatt-hour (MWh) stand-alone battery facility, is now fully operational in Yuma County, Arizona.

Sierra Pinta marks LRE’s second grid-connected battery project and is part of a six-phase rollout in Yuma County that began with White Wing Ranch Solar. Together, these projects bring LRE’s combined power in the region to more than 291 MW.

The project created approximately 100 jobs during construction and is expected to deliver long-term economic benefits to Yuma County, including an estimated $12,375,000 in local property tax revenue over the life of the project, along with ongoing community investments. As part of its commitment to being a long-term community partner, LRE supports local organizations such as Elevate Southwest, Helping Hands of Yuma, Dateland Elementary School, Antelope Union High School, and the Yuma Community Food Bank through the LRE Foundation, and invests in education and workforce development initiatives that help strengthen the region’s future.

Sierra Pinta is designed to store energy when demand is low and deliver that energy during periods of peak demand, typically in the evening. In doing so, the facility helps reduce system strain and supports more cost-effective power delivery during high-demand hours. This capability supports Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) customers by maintaining grid reliability, advancing regional energy storage goals, and providing resiliency for local homes and businesses.

“Bringing Sierra Pinta online is an important milestone for LRE and demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative and affordable energy solutions across the West,” said Sam Mangrum, Executive Vice President, Project Execution, LRE. “With a 112.5 MW interconnection, the facility underscores our ability to deliver large-scale, dispatchable power when and where it is needed most. We are proud to support PG&E and the broader energy market by meeting growing energy demand while creating long-term economic opportunities in the region.”
