New Research Links Hydrogen Water to Better Lung Recovery in Athletes

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Echo, the category leader in hydrogen wellness technology, today spotlighted emerging research showing the potential of molecular hydrogen to reduce lung injury and inflammation caused by high-intensity exercise. The study supports Echo’s mission to enhance daily performance, recovery, and resilience through science-driven hydrogen-based healing modalities.

Hydrogen for recovery—at a glance: Emerging research in the Journal of Thoracic Disease found that molecular hydrogen helped athletes training in winter reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and stabilize oxygen transport, with benefits that persisted

Published in the Journal of Thoracic Disease, the research found that hydrogen (H2) inhalation therapy mitigated oxidative stress and modulated the inflammatory response in athletes undergoing winter training. Participants experienced enhanced antioxidant capacity, reduced white blood cell counts, and more stable oxygen transport. Notably, the effects were sustained even after the training period. Echo addresses this modality with the Echo Refresh, an inhalation machine that delivers molecular hydrogen directly to the body.

While the study focused on inhalation, the core benefits come from molecular hydrogen’s ability to aid the body in neutralizing harmful free radicals—a mechanism also delivered by high-concentration hydrogen water, such as that produced by the Echo Flask.

“This study reinforces what our customers have been feeling for years—that hydrogen water can help you bounce back faster and train harder,” said Josh Carr, CEO of Echo. “We’ve always believed recovery is where real growth happens, and this research gives us a fresh way to talk about hydrogen’s role in supporting that process.”

For wellness and spa professionals, Echo recommends the Echo Refresh inhalation machine. For consumers, the company suggests the Echo Flask, which provides hydrogen water (up to 8 ppm) in a portable format, supporting wellness seekers with convenient access to advanced recovery hydration.

Sarah Taylor, Echo’s lead researcher, added, “The lungs are especially vulnerable during intense exercise due to rapid oxygen turnover and inflammation. Molecular hydrogen helps the body adapt by upregulating anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective pathways. Whether you inhale it or drink it, the effect is real.”

Leading athletes and biohackers such as Dave Asprey, Kelly Noonan Gores, Coach Blue, and Stacy Keibler, rely on Echo for their hydrogen water support. To learn more, visit www.echowater.com.
