Schneider’s streak continues with 13th SmartWay Excellence Award

The company is leading in innovative and responsible transportation

GREEN BAY, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Schneider National, Inc. (NYSE: SNDR), a premier multimodal provider of transportation, intermodal and logistics services, proudly announces it is a recipient of the 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This marks the 13th time Schneider has been honored with this prestigious award, highlighting the company’s continuing focus on making a positive impact on the world through its pursuit of responsible solutions for transportation.

The Excellence Award is given to the top performing EPA SmartWay Partners, recognizing those who excel in improving freight efficiency and contributing to cleaner air throughout their supply chains. As a recipient, Schneider has demonstrated outstanding environmental performance and leadership in the industry. This recognition highlights one of the many benefits of working with Schneider: customers focused on reducing emissions in their business operations can trust that their own sustainability goals will become easier and faster to achieve.

“Our commitment to making a positive impact on the world drives us to pursue responsible, sustainable solutions every day,” said Schneider Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Rob Reich. “That commitment resulted in our aggressive sustainability goals and investments in energy-efficient equipment and alternative fuels, which not only benefit our business but also help our customers achieve their own sustainability targets.”

Schneider has made significant strides toward its sustainability goals. The company began operating one of North America’s largest battery electric vehicle (BEV) fleets at its Southern California Operations Center in South El Monte and established a large-scale BEV charging depot. In just one year, Schneider’s 92 Freightliner eCascadias surpassed 1.5 million zero emission miles, avoiding over five million pounds of CO2 emissions.

In one year, Schneider’s Logistics segment significantly improved its SmartWay Performance Ranking to 1, the highest possible ranking, joining the ranks of the company’s Bulk, Intermodal and Truckload offerings, all of which hold Performance Rank 1, reflecting their excellence as top-tier transportation providers.

Schneider’s fuel-efficient solutions and efforts to reduce emissions are making a difference. The company is proudly already 90% of the way to its 2025 goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 7.5% per mile and aims to achieve a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions per mile by 2035.

As a responsible carrier, Schneider is exploring a variety of solutions to reduce carbon emissions in addition to the BEVs such as renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen internal combustion engines. For example, shifting to RNG could reduce tailpipe emissions by approximately 30%. Additionally, all of Schneider’s non-BEV tractors currently use a mixture of biodiesel — a renewable alternative derived from organic waste such as vegetable oil and animal fats — and conventional diesel, thereby reducing traditional diesel consumption.
