Rent Control Backers to Urge L.A. City Council to Endorse Prop 33

Advocates to Testify before City Council, Host Press Conference, Tues., October 15 @ 9:00 a.m.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rent control supporters and champions of Proposition 33, a November ballot initiative that will allow for the expansion of rent control in California, will testify at the Los Angeles City Council Meeting Tuesday to urge the Council to adopt Agenda Item Number 40. The item is a motion calling for the Council to endorse Proposition 33, a statewide initiative that would overturn the Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act of 1995, which prohibits most new rent control ordinances in communities across California. Before testifying before the Council, the rent control advocates will host a press conference on the Spring Street steps of City Hall.

More than 100 elected and formerly elected officials in California, including Congressmember Maxine Waters, Congressmember Barbara Lee, Congressmember Ro Khanna, State Senator Ben Allen, State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, and Assemblymembers Chris Holden (D-41st District) and Matt Haney (D-17^th District), also have endorsed Proposition 33.

Proposition 33 is just 23 words: "The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.” It would remove California’s statewide rent control ban and give local communities the right to stabilize rents and make apartments more affordable for low-income and middle-income renters.
